Originally opened in 1965, as one of four newly constructed residential care homes, funded by Devon County Council, to cater for, up to 36 elderly residents with dementia. The geometrical design of the centre, with its central garden, was carefully planned so that the then residents, with their limitations, could walk round the building and not feel a sense of being in a confined space as well as having a ‘green’ area at its heart.
St Michael’s changed from a residential care home to a day centre in 1992 when councils all over the country were trying to produce more care at patients’ homes however, in 2015 Devon County Council closed the day care facility. Despite the closure it was acknowledged that there was a strong need for the service and under a new organisation Honiton 55+ CIC the Day Care Centre re-opened 6th August 2015.
A decision was made to take advantage of the new legislation creating a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and Honiton 55+ CIO replaced the CIC on 30th March 2020.
